Queens Of The Stone Age to begin recording new album 'in January'

Queens Of The Stone Age are set to begin recording a new album in January.

Keyboardist Dean Fertita revealed that the band are "ready to go" on what will be the follow-up to 2007's 'Era Vulgaris'.

"Everybody seems excited and ready to go," Fertita told Billboard. "We've got so many ideas started already; I guess we'll see what turns out to be everybody's favorite."

"It's very much still [Josh Homme's] band," he continued. "But I think all of us really feel like we've found our space in it and can contribute to it as well."

A release date and title for the group's sixth studio effort has yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, the band recently reissued their 1998 self-titled debut album and earlier this year also released a 10th anniversary edition of their second LP, 'Rated R'.

Bloc Party reunite for Christmas

Bloc Party have reunited over the Christmas period.

The band, who have been on hiatus since mid-2009, have appeared together in a festive snap posted on their official Twitter page, Twitter.com/thisisblocparty.

Frontman Kele Okereke, bassist Gordon Moakes, guitarist Russell Lissack and drummer Matt Tong all appear in the picture, which is captioned: "Merry Christmas from the Bloc".

Earlier this year, Okereke released his debut solo album 'The Boxer' - and at the time told NME he was unsure whether Bloc Party would ever get back together.

"Who knows how we'll feel about anything in a year's time?" he said.

Moakes and Lissack have also worked on side projects - the former as part of hardcore band Young Legionnaire and the latter in Anglo-American duo Pin Me Down.

Lissack has also worked as Ash's touring guitarist since Bloc Party went on hiatus.

Ronnie Wood wants The Rolling Stones to play Glastonbury 2011

Ronnie Wood has said that he'd love The Rolling Stones to regroup to play Glastonbury next summer.

The guitarist told the Metro that it was "high time" the band got back together again, having been on a break from band duties for the last three years.

"I'd love to do it [Glastonbury]," he said. "I'm always up for the festivals. As far as the Stones are concerned we haven't had a get-together for three years but it's high time."

The band are perennially rumoured to be playing Glastonbury, but for 2011 rumours of headliners including Prince, Coldplay, Radiohead and Kylie Minogue are stronger than those of the veteran rockers potentially playing the June event.

With The Rolling Stones having a break, Wood has spent some of 2010 playing shows with the reformed Faces.

Franz Ferdinand, Zola Jesus, Klaxons pay tribute to Captain Beefheart

Franz Ferdinand, Klaxons and The Zutons are among the musicians to pay tribute to Captain Beefheart, following his death after complications from multiple sclerosis yesterday (December 17).

Captain Beefheart, whose real name was Don Van Vliet, passed away in hospital in California aged 69.

Writing on Twitter, Zola Jesus described the influence has had on her career.

"Gave my brother my old, worn down copy of 'Trout Mask Replica' before I moved as a thank you to introducing me to his music when I was far too young. Nothing he did was a mistake, there were no accidents in his music. Only sheer invention, passion... dear god, why does the world keep losing such important people? Who will fill their shoes? My heart is heavy for you, Don Van Vliet!"

Meanwhile, Billy Bragg Tweeted that "there was only ever one Captain Beefheart", while Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos wrote that he had "very much" influenced his own band.

Klaxons' Jamie Reynolds took to the site to say a simple "god bless", and The Zutons frontman Dave McCabe Tweeted that the musician "will be missed by all fans across the globe".

Paul McCartney plays London 100 Club show for 300 fans

Paul McCartney played a lunchtime gig at London's 100 Club today (December 17), treating the crowd to some of the biggest hits of his career.

The show was the smallest the former Beatle had played since he performed at the Cavern Club in his native Liverpool in 1999. The London venue has a capacity of 300 – with The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood among the audience members for the show.

Billed on tickets as A Packed Lunch At The 100 Club, McCartney played a 28-song set, kicking off just after 1pm (GMT). He greeted the crowd with a casual "Alright?", joking that his slightly late arrival was due to the traffic.

After he said that he thought the 100 Club, which is under threat of closure, needed to be saved, a shout of, "Why don't you buy it?" came from the crowd. "You buy it, I'll rent it!" the Liverpool legend quipped back.

With a plea for "No heckling, now!", he and his band launched into 'Matchbox', a Carl Perkins song that the Fab Four used to cover back in 1961.

He also played Big Joe Turner's 1953 hit 'Honey Hush', 'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying' (made famous by Ray Charles) and Marvin Gaye's 'Hitch Hike'. He also played 'One After 909', a song that appears on the final Beatles album 'Let It Be' but is also one of the earliest John Lennon/McCartney compositions, dating back to 1957.

A mid-set spell at the piano featured his solo favourite 'Maybe I'm Amazed' and 'Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five', the closing track on the recently-reissued 'Band On The Run' album.

McCartney was clearly relishing the special occasion, and was in playful form throughout. "We used to have to sign autographs on ciggy packets or bus tickets," he said before 'And I Love Her', "and now there's a chap here holding up an iPad with, 'Paul: sign my iPad!' on the screen!" Just after the song finshed, another fan handed him a Christmas present: a seven-inch single of Little Richard's 'Shake A Hand'.

Later, before 'Dance Tonight', he played a jaunty song called 'Petruska' on ukelele in a mock-Russian accent, laughing that a review of a previous show in which he played it had described it as "an ancient Russian folk song".

Following on from perennial main set closer 'Hey Jude' he returned for an encore that began with 'Yesterday', once more urging the crowd to help save the 100 Club. "It's a really cool place," he said, "and many of my heroes have played on this stage. This has been a blast, let's do it again sometime!"

The band then rejoined him for a medley of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (Reprise)' and 'The End'.

He's now set to play two shows this weekend, at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London tomorrow and the O2 Academy Liverpool on Monday.

Paul McCartney played:

'Matchbox'
'Magical Mystery Tour'
'Jet'
'Drive My Car'
'All My Loving'
'One After 909'
'Honey Hush'
'Let Me Roll It'
'The Long And Winding Road'
'Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five'
'Maybe I'm Amazed'
'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying'
'Blackbird'
'Calico Skies'
'I'm Looking Through You'
'And I Love Her'
'Petruska'
'Dance Tonight'
'Eleanor Rigby'
'Hitch Hike'
'Band On The Run'
'Ob-La Di, Ob-La Da'
'Let It Be'
'Hey Jude'
'Yesterday'
'Get Back'
'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (Reprise)'/The End'

Suede's Brett Anderson has said that the band are planning on playing more gigs next year.

Having played their biggest indoor show ever at London's O2 Arena earlier this month the reunited five-piece have no more public gigs on their schedule. But Anderson said they had enjoyed their shows this year so much they were keen to carry on into 2011.

"We all really enjoyed the tour," he told XFM, "because we did a European tour leading up to the O2. The O2 was really special as well, and I think we all enjoying doing this at the moment… I think in all likelihood we'll probably carry on doing stuff next year."

SPEEDCAKE (Frankfurt)

Paul McCartney glad he reconciled with John Lennon before Beatle's death

Paul McCartney has said he is glad he managed to patch up his friendship with John Lennon before the former Beatle's death in 1980.

Speaking on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, McCartney revealed that the pair had "got [their] friendship back together" after having "a lot of business problems".

He made the comments in the wake of the 30th anniversary of Lennon's murder by Mark Chapman, which was marked by his family, friends and fans around the world on December 8.

"We'd chat about how to make bread. Just ordinary stuff, you know. He'd had a baby by then - he'd had Sean - so we could talk babies and family and bread and stuff. So that made it a little bit easier, the fact that we were buddies," McCartney said.

He also spoke out about Lennon's "senseless" murder, adding: "A phrase kept going in my head about the guy who killed him: Jerk of all jerks. It was just so, so sad because we thought John would be around forever, we'd hang."

The singer, who is due to play two Christmas gigs in London and Liverpool later this month, also performed 'Here Today' on the US chatshow as a tribute to Lennon.

Earlier this week, Lennon's widow Yoko Ono told NME that he would "definitely be experimenting on some new music" were he still alive today.

This week's issue of NME, which is on UK newstands and is available digitally worldwide, also features an interview with Sean Lennon, as well as features on John Lennon's life and his final days.

The acts will record their take on American composer John Cage's concept of recording four minutes and 33 seconds of silence. They'll release it on December 13 in attempt to bag the Christmas Number One.

Proceeds from the single will go to various charities. See Facebook.com/cageagainstthemachine for more information.

Thom Yorke, David Cameron and Mark Ronson took part in a similar 'silent' single project recently to mark Remembrance Day.

Primal Scream bring 'Screamadelica' to London

Primal Scream brought their seminal 1991 album 'Screamadelica' to London last night (November 25), playing the first of their shows at which they're playing the record in full.

They played a greatest hits set at the Olympia venue followed by all the songs from the Andrew Weatherall-produced album, with frontman Bobby Gillespie telling NME the band weren't lapsing into nostalgia by re-visiting the record.

"It's not really reliving the old days," he claimed. "A lot of the songs we recorded in the studio and never played them live. 'I'm Comin' Down', 'Shine Like Stars' and 'Inner Flight', those are like new songs. It's not nostalgic at all, it sounds fresh."

When asked if the band could give the same live treatment to more of their records, the singer said no plans were in place yet. "Anything's possible, I can't see that far into the future," he said. "The band's sounding great and there's gospel singers in, it’s a big production."

Primal Scream are reissuing 'Screamadelica', remastered by the band and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, next March. They then tour the album around the UK.

They play the Olympia again tonight.

Primal Scream played:

'Accelerator'
'Country Girl'
'Jailbird'
'Burning Wheel'
'Suicide Bomb'
'Shoot Speed/Kill Light'
'Swastika Eyes'
'Rocks'
'Movin' On Up'
'Slip Inside This House'
'Don't Fight It, Feel It'
'Damaged'
'I'm Comin' Down'
'Shine Like Stars'
'Inner Flight'
'Higher Than The Sun (Pts 1+2)'
'Loaded'
'Come Together'

Radiohead's Thom Yorke creates 'human sculpture' in Brighton

Radiohead's Thom Yorke created a 'human sculpture' depicting 11th Century Viking King Canute in Brighton today (November 27).

The project was in collaboration with the 350 Earth climate campaign organisation.

The frontman enlisted volunteers through the band’s website, Radiohead.com/deadairspace, to stand in formation in the coastal city to create the design (pictured), which he devised with Radiohead sleeve designer Stanley Donwood.

He said the plan was to make an "image facing the sea that is visible from space".

The stunt was designed to send a warning about the precarious global climate situation to politicians attending the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Cancun, Mexico on Monday (29).

See Earth.350.org for more information.

Shaun Ryder bitten by a snake on 'I'm A Celebrity…' – Daily Gossip

Welcome to the Daily Gossip: your daily stop-off to find out what the stars of the music world have been up to in the tabloids and beyond, with the help of plenty of "anonymous sources".

Today's top gossip:

Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder gets our king of the jungle vote after enduring a snake bite on I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. The singer had to undergo medical treatment after a python sank its teeth into his fingers on the bushtrucker trial. Not surprisingly, he screamed plenty of expletives.

From the papers and beyond:

On the subject of unlikely collaborations now, we didn't see this one coming – Devlin duetting with Paul Weller. The pair sang The Modfather's 'Fast Car/Slow Traffic' at a recent gig at Brighton Centre. "I had butterflies before but after my first verse I saw hands in the audience and that gave me a lift," the rapper admitted (The Sun).

Kings Of Leon drummer Nathan Followill has kicked off a catfight with his ex-girlfriend on Twitter. He celebrated Thanksgiving by dissing his former lover. "Happy Thanksgiving everyone," he wrote. "Except 4 ex-girlfriend, happy skanksgiving. You know who you are."

On a lighter note, Shakira has splashed a load of cash to help kids affected by the Haiti earthquake, we read. The singer has stumped up £420,000 from a Christmas ad she recently appeared in to help a school in the country and in her homeland Colombia (Daily Record).

Self-indulgence award of the week goes to Cheryl Cole for getting a seventh tattoo scrawled on her lower back. The red-tops continue to obssess over The X Factor's judge every move as she flashed "what looked like a ribbon" when she entered the show's north London studios (various).

Yoko Ono praises X Factor contestants on Beatles night

Yoko Ono has spoken out in support of this year's X Factor contestants following their tribute to The Beatles.

Hopefuls on the ITV reality pop show last night (November 20) performed songs by the Fab Four following the historic digital release of the band's catalogue on iTunes.

And John Lennon's widow took to Twitter to support two of the frontrunners in the competition's girls category.

Show favourite Cher Lloyd performed 'Imagine' while the embattled Katie Waissel tackled 'Help'.

Following the show, Ono tweeted: "Cher & Katie - I watched you sing Imagine and Help! on #XFactor and thought you were fantastic! A big hug to both of you, love yoko." (sic)

This was the first time The X Factor has staged a Beatles night, although Paul McCartney performed at the final of last year's competition.

The band's songs have been tipped to re-enter the charts tonight.

Klaxons' naked orgy clip released online – NSFW video

Klaxons have got naked for a promo video for their latest single 'Twin Flames'.

The video features the band stripped to their birthday suits and engaging with a selection of similarly nude females with a visually disturbing twist – watch it on the right now.

It was directed by Saam Farahmand, who has also worked with The xx, These New Puritans and New Young Pony Club.

Singer and bassist Jamie Reynolds told NME: "As ever Saam has taken what stems from an innocent discussion regarding the meaning of the song and turned it into a visual playground – his finest work to date."

'Twin Flames' was released as a single last month and appears on Klaxons' second album, 'Surfing The Void'.

'Hey Jude' is most popular Beatles song

'Hey Jude' has emerged as the UK's favourite song by The Beatles after the band's catalogue was added to iTunes this week.

The Fab Four's music was finally added to the digital music store following the resolution of a long-fought trademark dispute between Apple and the band's label Apple Corps.

And as the first week of sales draws to a close, the Paul McCartney-penned anthem is the biggest selling Beatles track, according to The Guardian.

The song is comfortably outselling its nearest rival, 'Let It Be'.

Earlier this week, bookies had been giving odds of 8-1 of this week’s top ten being made up entirely of Beatle songs. However according to midweek figures, while the band have 29 new entries in the top 200, it looks unlikely that any of them will crack the top 40.

Meanwhile, tonight's X Factor will see the contestants tackling Beatles songs.

Italian officials spend £640,000 of EU money on Elton John gig - Daily Gossip

Noel's nice try, Rochelle and Marvin split, Alice Cooper loves Horrors – your music gossip stop

Welcome to the Daily Gossip: your daily stop-off to find out who in the world of music has been up to what.

Today's top gossip:

Italian officials have defended spending a reported £640,000 of EU public funding money on an Elton John gig. The donated cash was initially to be used for regional development in the country, and some MP's have complained that a gig by the Rocket Man doesn't really constitute that. However, Dario Scalabrini, a former head of the region of Campania's tourism office, remained impressively defiant. "I don't understand the problem," he said. "We would have used EU funds to pay (Paul) McCartney too," (Guardian).

From the papers:

Rochelle Wiseman from The Saturdays and Marvin Humes from JLS have split up. No word yet on how the music world will survive without this cataclysmically talented duo joined at the hip (The Sun).

Noel Gallagher's obviously trying to get his hands on Dave Grohl's 'nicest man in rock' title. He paid for a group of his mates to travel first class from London to Manchester ahead of Wednesday's (November 10) derby between City and United, and then put them up in the city's five-star Radisson Edwardian hotel (Daily Star).

Alice Cooper still has it. He says he wants to work on a musical with Noel Fielding, and also digs The Horrors. "The guitarist is amazing," he said of Joshua Hayward (Daily Star).

Natasha Bedingfield returns, sounding like she's trying to be David Brent. "I strip it back and keep it real, that's the kind of person I am," she said (Daily Record).

Blur's Alex James awarded honorary doctorate

Blur's Alex James has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Bournemouth University.

The bassist was made a Doctor Of Arts at the [b]International Centre in his home town last week (November 5).

"I'm absolutely chuffed to bits, but not as chuffed as my mum who's doing somersaults in the corner somewhere," James said. "It feels hugely flattering. It's a great honour and what's really nice is coming back to Bournemouth, which holds a very dear place in my heart."

James went on to express his thoughts on higher education.

"Blur formed in an art college, [we were] very much the product of an arts education system," he explained. "I really don't think it matters what you do. You just have to follow your heart and do the thing you love the most. I think arts education is absolutely vital. It's one of the things we're absolutely brilliant at."

Beady Eye's 'Bring The Light' – fans give their verdict

Beady Eye made their first song 'Bring The Light' available as a free download yesterday (November 10), and fans have been giving their verdict on the track via the NME.COM Office Blog.

The song is available for free from the band's official website, Beadyeyemusic.com, and will also be released as a seven-inch vinyl, with a cover of World Of Twist's 'Sons Of The Stage' on the B-side, via the same site.

Based on the mini-reviews posted on NME.COM it seems reactions to Beady Eye's debut have been mixed.

NME.COM user psj3809 wrote: "I'm torn on this, [I'm a] huge Oasis fan but at the moment [I'm] very disappointed… [I] suppose Liam can't win, if it sounds like another Oasis song he'll get slated, if it sounds different… he'll get slated as well. Disappointed, [I] need to hear another tune."

Mark, meanwhile, wrote: "I like it. It's a departure enough to be considered 'them', and not 'Oasis', but it's a big tune. Good song. And I like it more after every listen."

User legend was less positive about the song, writing: "Great piano loop but [I] can't help but feel this could have been mega, and [I have a] feeling of disappointment that the song sort of doesn't go anywhere. It's Liam by numbers, verse, chorse and repeat the first verse again and again, seems like he has always had a problem coming up with a second verse."

Have your say and listen to the song on the NME Office Blog now.

Beady Eye's debut album will be released next year.

Mark Ronson records bagpipe song with The View's Kyle Falconer

Mark Ronson and The View's Kyle Falconer have teamed up for a bagpipe-based song.

The Scottish singer/guitarist was enlisted by Ronson to collaborate on 'The Bike Song', which was released on Ronson's 'Record Collection' album earlier this year - watch the music video for it on the right.

Now Falconer has told NME that the pair worked on further material together.

"We recorded a couple of tracks," he confirmed. "There is one with bagpipes on it. He phoned me and was like, 'I don't want to sound racist but I have this song with bagpipes, do you want to write some lyrics and a melody around it?'."

The singer/guitarist said that there were no plans to release the song, but added: "Maybe it will be a one-off Christmas song."

Following his collaboration work Falconer has returned to work with his main band, with The View set to tour the UK this month. Their new album will be released in early 2011.

Welcome to the Daily Gossip: your daily stop-off to find out who in the world of music has been up to what.

Today’s top gossip:

Shaun Ryder is to take part in this year's series of 'I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!'. And as anyone who saw Ghosthunting With…Happy Mondays (scroll down and click below to watch a clip) last year will know, this is a very, very good thing. The series starts on Sunday (November 14), at 9pm (GMT) on ITV1. Linford Christie, Gail Porter and Lembit Opik are among the other contestants.

From the papers:

Dizzee Rascal and the cast of Jackass were the last men standing at the MTV EMA afterparty in Madrid on Sunday night (November 7). No word on whether they were playing nutball together though (The Sun).

Chuck D says he wants Amy Winehouse to join Public Enemy for their IndigoO2 gig in London on November 14. "She can handle all the smoke," he said (Daily Mirror).

Vampire Weekend might go in a hip-hop or R&B direction for their new material. "We all really love the Drake album," drummer Chris Tomson said. "Maybe it'll rub off on our next batch of music." We wait with baited breath (Daily Star).

Noel Gallagher says he's not bothered about his kids supporting Manchester City FC, because he likes the idea of "being the old Blue and jumping over the couch at them when we go 3-1 up". Wishful thinking? (Various)

And finally... Big Brother stalwart Nicki Grahame is set to tour the UK in November - playing covers of indie classics. She'll be belting out the likes of 'Someday' by The Strokes, 'She's So Loose' by Supergrass and 'Music When The Lights Go Out' by The Libertines. An album is to follow in early 2011...

Aerosmith to record 'old school' new album in 2011

Drummer Joey Kramer reveals 'my brothers and I are destined to make another record'

Aerosmith are going to record an "old school" new album next year.

In an interview with SpinnerMusic.co.uk, drummer Joey Kramer revealed that they are "going to do it the old way".

"Yeah, we're going to make an album," he said. "That would be very special. I would like to see a record within a year from the Aerosmith boys. My brothers and I are destined to make another record in the next year or so."

"It's going to be an old school Aerosmith record," he continued. "We're going to do it the old way with the whole band [in the same room] and it should be a good one. We're all anticipating."

Despite a turbulent past, which has included crisis talks to save the band from splitting, Kramer admits that the only thing that will stop them continuing as a group is if one of them dies.

"One of the things that's great about being in this band is that I never know what's going to happen next," he explained. "What you see in the mirror, is that really what you're going to get or not?"

He added: "Really, at this point in time, the only thing that's going to stop us is if someone out-and-out dies. Other than that, we've already been through what we've been through and stood the test of time. What else is there?"

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo: 'I can see myself being in the band for another 20 years'

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo has revealed that he can see himself being in the band for another 20 years.

The frontman admitted that although they were recently offered $10million to split the group up, he can see playing in the band till he's 60.

"There's a cut-off point, maybe 60," Cuomo told Nola.com. "Assuming the audience still wants us to do this, I can see myself doing this for another 20 years or so. Then somebody's got to pull me off the stage."

Despite the possibility of another two decades of Weezer, Cuomo explained that the group could continue for even longer.

"It's so hard to leave this relationship once you're in it," he said. "Now it's easy for me to say, 'I should retire by the time I'm 60'. But when I'm 59, I'll be thinking, 'No! I don't want this to end!'"

As previously reported, Weezer have followed up the release of their eighth studio album, 'Hurley', with a rarities collection called 'Death To False Metal', which was released yesterday (November 1).

John Lennon to appear on new £5 coin

John Lennon is set to appear on a new commemorative £5 coin.

The late Beatle won the Royal Mint's public vote to be immortalised on a limited edition coin, as part of their 'Great Briton' series.

Winning with 92% of the vote, Lennon beat the likes of Jane Austin, John Logie Baird and Walter Raleigh, reports BBC News.

"It's entirely fitting that John Lennon has been chosen by the public in what would have been his 70th year," Dave Knight, director of commemorative coins at Royal Mint said. "The massive proportion of the vote he received shows clearly just how much his untimely death still resonates with the nation."

Only 5,000 coins have been issued, plus a one-off 24-carat gold version of the coin, which will be given to John Lennon's estate.

The price of the coin is £44.99. For more information visit RoyalMint.com

As previously reported, fans from around the world paid respect to John Lennon on what would have been his 70th birthday on October 9. A number of tribute concerts took place and even a memorial statue was unveiled in Liverpool.

Peter, Bjorn and John to release 'pop rock album'

Peter, Bjorn and John have revealed that their upcoming new album will see them going back to their roots to release a "pop rock album".

Set for release in early 2011, the group's sixth studio effort is the follow up to 2009's 'Living Thing'.

"We originally planned to make a punk rock album," drummer John Eriksson told Spin. "But listening to it now it's definitely a pop rock album. But it sounds more punk rock when we play the songs live!"

"We've sort [of] gone back to the beginning," he continued. Adding that the songs have elements of new wave and power pop. "It's like Back To The Future!"

The album was produced by Per Sunding (The Cardigans), who Eriksson admitted was to blame for the band drinking in the studio and that even new song 'Tomorrow Has To Wait', is all about being drunk during recording sessions.

"We were more drunk this time," the drummer said. "We have to blame the producer for that. He made us drink more. A lot of the final cuts were the drunken versions."

Currently untitled, the group have been asking their fans to help them out with a name.

""We've been working on an album title for six months," Eriksson explained. "We've been asking our fans on Twitter, We have everything from 'Clever Pig' to 'Stupid Sock', which have been working titles. But it's not going to be called anything like that. We're working on it!"
